Robert L. Lewis Obituary

Robert Lemenuel Lewis, 89, of Bogata, Texas, passed away on July 21, 2026 at Focused Care Nursing Home in Clarksville, Texas.


Robert was born on January 10, 1937, in McCrury, Texas, to Leroy and Jackie Lewis. He graduated from Bogata High School in 1955 and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. During his military service, he traveled extensively around the world, from the North Pole to the South Pole.


On February 22, 1964, he married Sandra Jan Morgan in Bogata.


Robert retired in 1993 after 28 years with the telephone company. He was a skilled craftsman who enjoyed building custom rifles, and creating custom gavels, many of which are treasured by family and friends. He also enjoyed  shooting rifles, archery, mowing lawns, and volunteering his time calling Bingo at the Bogata Senior Center for 12 years.


Robert faithfully served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Bogata. He was  a 33 degree Master Mason for 65 years, holding membership in Rosalie Masonic Lodge #527, Paris Lodge #25, Deport Lodge #381, and Roxton Lodge, where he served as Past Master and other offices. He was a Past District Deputy of the Grand Lodge of Texas. He was also the last surviving charter member of the Roxton Volunteer Fire Department in Roxton, Texas.


Robert is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sandra Jan Lewis of Bogata; his daughter, Leah Lee and husband, James; granddaughter, Brittany Cooper and husband, Jeffrey; great-granddaughter, Susie Cooper; step-grandson, Daniel Lee; brother, Charley Lewis and wife, Donnie; brother-in-law, Vandy Morgan and wife, Elaine; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Jackie Lewis, his father and mother-in-law Edward Van and Eula Morgan; and Jennifer Lee, step-granddaughter-in-law.


Robert will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his love for his family, his craftsmanship, and his lifetime of service to his church, community, and country. His gentle spirit, generosity, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.


Visitation will be Friday, July 24 from  6 - 8 pm at the Wood - Haggard Funeral Home in Bogata. The funeral will be Saturday, July 25 at 10 am at the First Baptist Church of Bogata. Burial and Masonic Rites to follow at McCrury Cemetery in Red River County. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the McCrury Cemetery Association, 769 FM 196, Bogata, Texas 75417.
