Floyd Ashley {Sonny} Cooper, 94 of Paris and formerly of Amarillo

Floyd Ashley (Sonny) Cooper, Jr. age 94 of Paris and formerly of Amarillo, died on January 12, 2017. He was born in Amarillo on March 11, 1922.

Sonny attended Texas Tech University and the University of Texas. During those years he played and led several Big Bands including the Sonny Cooper Band. He then started Cooper & Melin Records & Books in downtown Amarillo, several years later they were the first business to sign a contract in the Wolflin Village shopping center with a second location. Over the years the store hosted many artists, musicians, and had some interesting confrontations about books!

He married Sally Elsey on November 16, 1950. They met when he hired her at Cooper and Melin. She preceded in death.

He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed life, friends, music!

Survivors include one daughter, April and her husband, Dr. Macy Inmon of Paris; one son, Kent and his wife Lisa Cooper of Corpus Christi.  Grandchildren, Max Inmon of Norman, OK and Carlos and Marcus Cooper of Corpus Christi; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The memorial service will be Saturday, January 28 at 11:00am in the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo, Texas.  The family suggests donations be made to your local public library.
