Image1Mr. Rufus Ward, Jr. age 84 of Bogata died Sunday June 1 in Arlington, Texas
Funeral Services will be 3pm Thursday June 5 at First Baptist Church of Bogata with Rev Jeff Duvall officiating. Burial will be in Bogata Cemetery under direction of Wood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 2-3 pm Thursday at the church
Mr. Ward was born August 26, 1929 in Red River County the son of Rufus Ward Sr. and Melba Olive Warren Ward. He married the former Patsy Ann Franklin, Dec 2, 1955 in Bogata. She preceded him in death November 4, 2001. He was also preceded in death by three brothers John, Dean and Roger Ward. He was pastor at the Fulbright and Bagwell Baptist Churches before moving to Dallas in 1968 to continue his education. He went into the grocery business instead and eventually owned a chain of 12 convenience stores, Ward Food Mart. After retiring in 1991, he farmed in the Bogata area and lived in Paris until 1999 when he moved back to Bogata. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He served as the first Republican Commissioner of Red River County from Nov 12, 2002 until Dec 31, 2009.
He is survived by his daughters Carla Allen and husband James of Arlington, and Dana Weaver and husband Jonathan of Longmont ,Colorado, a son Steven Ward and wife Anita of Venus ,Texas, six grandchildren Warren and Daniel Allen, Ansley Phillips, Ashlyn Weaver, Shon Smith and Ryan Brennan, three brothers Jerry Neil Ward of Bogata, William H (Bill) Ward of Henderson and Felix Ward of Conroe, six sisters Merle Palmer of Mt Pleasant, Jo Hoover of Pittsburg, Mildred Gummett of Odessa, Nina Couch of Welch, Louisiana, Shirley Anderson and Sandra Stockton of Bogata and numerous nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends.
